The legal SEO landscape has undergone a structural shift. What worked in 2020 — thin practice area pages, aggressive link building, and local directory spam — now actively harms rankings. Google has moved to an entity-based understanding of expertise, and law firms that fail to adapt are losing ground to competitors who have.

The Entity Era: Why E-E-A-T Matters More Than Ever

Google’s ranking systems now evaluate Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) at a granular level. For law firms, this means every piece of content must demonstrate genuine legal expertise, not just keyword targeting. Attorney author pages with verifiable credentials, case results with specific outcomes, and practice area content that reflects actual courtroom experience all contribute to entity strength.

We analysed 340 law firm websites across competitive US, UK, and UAE markets. The firms ranking in positions 1-3 for high-intent terms shared three characteristics: robust author entities linked to bar associations, comprehensive practice area hubs with minimum 15 supporting pages each, and structured data implementations that explicitly declare attorney credentials.

Technical Foundations That Still Win

Despite the focus on content quality, technical SEO remains the foundation. Our audit data shows that 67% of law firm websites have critical Core Web Vitals failures, primarily Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) issues caused by unoptimised hero images and render-blocking third-party scripts.

The fix is rarely complex. Proper image compression, font subsetting, and deferred script loading typically bring LCP under 2.5 seconds. But the impact is disproportionate: firms that resolved CWV issues saw an average 23% increase in organic click-through rates within 60 days.

Internal Link Architecture: The Overlooked Lever

Most law firm websites treat internal linking as an afterthought. Pages link to the homepage and the contact page, and little else. This wastes the single most controllable ranking signal available.

The correct approach is a hub-and-spoke architecture where each practice area page serves as a hub, linking to and from every relevant supporting article, FAQ page, and case result. This creates clear topical clusters that search engines can map to specific queries.

The AI Search Factor

With Google AI Overviews appearing in an increasing percentage of legal queries, content structure matters more than volume. AI systems pull from well-structured, authoritative content that directly answers specific questions. Short, definitive paragraphs with clear headers outperform long-form content that buries the answer.

What to Do Now

Start with a technical audit. Fix Core Web Vitals. Then audit your content for E-E-A-T signals: are your attorneys clearly attributed as authors? Do your practice area pages reflect genuine expertise? Is your internal link architecture creating clear topical clusters? These fundamentals are not glamorous, but they are what separates firms that rank from firms that do not.
